Most Americans couldn’t tell you who’s in charge of their building’s elevator. Maintenance? Electrical? Perhaps the doorman is a multi-talented savant?
The truth is that every elevator in the US is maintained by a trained elevator mechanic. In fact, the most highly-skilled mechanics master nine skilled trades as part of The National Elevator Industry Educational Program (NEIEP)’s apprenticeship program and receive the best benefits of any trade in the country.
As part of the NEIEP program, apprentices are paid while they learn on the job with mentors, as well as in the classroom, tuition-free, one night a week. After four years of training with NEIEP, newly-minted mechanics have multiple in-demand skill sets and a stable career earning a substantial salary - a rewarding path that can build generational wealth for someone who likes to solve problems, work with their hands, and feel fulfilled at work.
To attract the best talent available for future generations, they knew it was time to expand beyond their current reach. The first step was to hire Sarah Miller, who lead this initiative for NEIEP.
Stepping into this role, Sarah had a huge challenge in front of her - how could she share the breadth and depth of this opportunity in a compelling and consistent way with industry outsiders who have no prior knowledge of elevator careers?
